I have worked with both expensive and cheap DELL machines and other computers such as GENESIS, Fujitsu Siemens, RM, etc. I have also seen some HP in action. But if you want to buy a medium range computer I suggest DELL.
1. Because dell mashines are actually extensivelly tested before they go out.
2. You buy quality: just open a DELL and see how the cooling system works, how good built the components are etc. These mashines are simply impresive. However you may also find that are abit more expensive than other mashines which may appear to be faster. However you pay a bit more because you buy quality and quality means that during summer a medium range dell wont overheat and after 1-2 years the cooling system will be as good as new or in your area you may have free technical support with the option to have a repair man coming to your home to fix your dell if it has a problem. However DELL's never break down. So you dont have to pay for this service

As someone who's worked in a computer store and seen the computers that people bring in, I suggest an HP. First off, I think they have the best general mix of hardware and prepackaged software out there. Secondly, Dells are garbage. Their customer support is nonexistant, and their machines break down at the drop of a dime. Stay away from any Dell product, and buy HP or Sony.

I would buy the HP simply because I have owned Dell's and their customer support isn't any better than HP's. With HP you get more bang for the buck and I don't care what these other people are saying ,I have dealt with the customer support from both HP and Dell and they both are good. They will only charge you if your pc is out of the warranty period and all pc manufacturers will charge if the warranty is up.

I'd go for the Dell. Even if the HP is cheaper in price.

HP and Compaq are the same company. They make cheap PCs in general with cheap parts, which is why many users will get suckered in buying them for the cheap price but find out shortly after how many problems they run into with the system. It's just not worth the money.

I would go with a Dell (other than I have one) because they have better prices, better parts, and better service over all. Also you have choices in the products that you get with it, and almost all of them can be upgraded. However....if you go with the Dell computer and you get a printer to go with it....don't get the dell printer. You can't get the new ink for them anywhere but through dell.

As much as I hate Dell I have to go with Dell.

I have both but if I were in your situation and looking for one, I would go with DELL.. Better quality products, better support, just better...

HP customer support is seemingly non-existant. If you need them to help you fix a problem they will charge you.
Warranty or not

I would definetly go with Dell. If something goes wrong, Dell is more flexible when it comes to replacing parts. This is an important consideration as far as upgrading as well.

HP

Dells are made with poor quality parts and are not assembled well.

I have had poor experiences with Dell, including the loss of all of our data on the hard drive.
