Yeah this is true. It's very sad actually. this takes place in Japan and Korea and Many other Asian countries. I'm an animal lover, I have 4 dogs that were all rescued. Although I agree with dude that said killing any animal is bad, I think that we are more used to cows, and chickens. Something like a dog, which as been labeled man's best friend is horrible.
They actually torture the animals by beating them, using blow torches, slaming them against walls and a great deal of other things. Whats worse is they take puppies from 3 months old and eat them. They skin the animal, usually right in front of other dogs, waiting for the same faith. They use the blow torches to burn off the hair. It's just a horrible and sad sight.
If you are an animal lover, I'd advise you to look around the internet for videos.

How? Not at ALL!! Japanese people DON'T eat dogs, so they CAN'T torture them and then eat them!!

Why are some people so stupid that they believe rubbish like this?

Anyway, for one thing, SOME countries have dog on the menu, but Japan is NOT one of them. And for another thing, don't you realise that cows, sheep, pigs and chickens have feelings too?

No, dogs are NOT eaten in Japan. They are pets. Cats aren't eaten either.... I should know - I was born there and lived there for 18 years.

I have no idea how this Asian eating dogs and cats thing has started, but as far as Japan is concerned, this is NOT TRUE.

Food are very cultural and regional thing. While I do not agree with toture of animals, we shouldn't be so quick to judge other culture.

Japan people do not eat dog at all. Or cat.

I heard it is in America that people eat dog, and that strayd dog is barbequed or minsed. Many people in America become bored of pet dog, and then sell the dog for food. But I dont now if they torture the dog.

The shadows of the excitement for World Cup 2002, the issue of Koreans eating dogs has come to the fore. As a result, there is talk among potential spectators of boycotting the 2002 World Cup, hosted by South Korea in conjunction with Japan. Famous animal rights activists like Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock (who wear fur) have denounced Koreans for eating dogs. Many activist websites show the same overused picture of a dog being hanged and beaten.

Well it's not really news, but animal cruelty occurs whenever people kill animals for food. I certainly don't have a problem with protesting against animal cruelty. However, I do object to singling out the consumption of dogs specifically, which transforms the issue into one of cultural intolerance.

I agree that it is wrong to kill dogs cruelly. But I don't find anything wrong with humanely killing dogs—or any other animal, for that matter—for food. People eat all kinds of meat: beef, lamb, pork, chicken. To point only at the killing of dogs is absurd. Don't cows suffer just as much? How do you think that tender slab of veal gets from the barnyard to your table? I'm sure the people of the world who believe that the cow is a sacred animal object to killing cows for food. But if the country of India cried out to the rest of the world to stop killing cows, it likely wouldn't get too far. When Americans cry out for "justice" on behalf of the dogs, however, people pay attention and the media leaps on the story, further dramatizing the situation.

It is absurd for any meat eater to say that eating dogs is different from eating any other animal. In nature, no animal is "better" than another. The hierarchy of animals is a social construct—and thus differs from from one culture to the next.

The Western world's attachment to dogs is deep-rooted, and Western culture dominates the globe. What the West says usually goes. But just because Korea's eating habits differ from those of other countries does not mean it should be forced to conform to those countries' sense of propriety.

Perhaps the strangest thing about this situation is the fact that people are calling for a boycott of a soccer tournament because they object to what the host country eats. If you want to go to the World Cup and don't want to eat dog, there is an abundance of other tasty Korean foods more readily available.

The press and the activists suggest that every Korean eats dogs, but I don't think that even the majority of Koreans has eaten or will eat dog. Born in the U.S., I'm a Westernized Korean-American dog-owner with no intention of ever eating dog, but I am still able to recognize—and respect—this as a cultural difference between Korean dog-eaters and myself.

History proves that dominant countries will always try to control and influence the cultures of smaller countries. One would think that in this day and age, after civil rights movements, genocides, and flaring racial tensions, people would be somewhat sensitive to cultural differences and try to promote the preservation of cultural identities. I guess not.

It's not just dogs. Asian countries boil cats alive, beat dogs to death, hang live eels and snakes from nails and gut them alive, and all kinds of terrible things, simply for the pleasure of the 15 minutes it take to eat them.

If it bothers you, look for some sort of charity that is working against it and either donate, volunteer, or write letters. And also do some soul searching as to why it's bad to do that to cats & dogs, but not to lobsters, chickens, and calves. Just something to ponder.

Good lord, no. There are some Asian countries who do endorse dog meat, but I do not think they torture them. If they do, this must be stopped. Is there any proof of this, anyone?
