I know that they won't get rich by any means, but do they at least break 50k/year if they go into therapy?

Yes they can. Its really hard to go into practice by yourself, but you can be profitable after time. It might be easier to go into practice with someone else, then branch out on your own. Social workers are the most underappreciated people in the workforce.

The hospital where I work at, pays the MSW about $41/hour.

Should be easy to break 50k, just see as many patients as possible.
