They can garnish the patient's check and/or the mother's check if she guaranteed the bill. But they would have to get a court order to do so. However, if the party was under 18 when the charges were incurred Mom alone bear the burden.

If the child was under the mother's insurance because they were a college student and this is a portion of the bill not covered, or for a procedure that was not covered then the bill is mom's respobsibility.

Depends: 1. was the medical procedure done when the 21 yr old was still considered a 'dependent' to the Mother. i.e. was the 21yr still in college or was the 21yr old still living at home or was the procedure done when the 21yr still a minor?. 2. I assume the way the question is worded, the Mother attended the hospital/Dr's office with the 21yr old,did the Mother sign a financial responsibility form upon admitting? This could have happened. Perhaps they would not have admitted the 21yr old if he/she did not have insurance so the Mother signed the form for work to be done. So, in short, if just depends.

he collection firms will of course threaten this, threaten to put someone in jail, come and take thier car and about any lie they think you will believe.

I suspect that hospitals do not charge at all.Talk to someone at the hospital.Be persistent.Insurance?

no, but you can ask the hospital to split the payments over a certain amount of months to make it affordable. they will usually assist you with that.
