1) By plane. In Europe there are many discount airlines that offer service to Russia with prices lower than train tickets. Check the following site: http://whichbudget.com/

If you're travelling from outside of Europe, either book tickets through your agent (or try www.kayak.com, which will do comparison search for you) or fly to Europe (Germany, for example) first and then fly a budget airline from there.

2) If you're really that budget concerned, try taking a bus (much-much less comfortable than a train or a plane, but can be quite cheap). I remember eurolines.com, but probably there are many others. I know that many Russian (and Ukrainian) students travel to Europe by bus.

Don't try to rent a car and drive to Russia - it can be quite dangerous, I am serious! Ditto hitch-hiking, unless you're an experienced hich-hiker and can defend yourself under ugly circumstances. And I think in Russia drivers expect that you'll pay them (in cash or in kind).

If you are located in US, your best and probably the only bet is to travel by plane. Most of the time, you don't directly fly to Russia, but you have to change planes in Europe. And here you can choose to travel further by train or bus instead of continuing by plane. If you fly thru Germany, that might be the cheapest option.
If you are located in Europe, it is cheaper to travel by train. However, traveling by train might be very entertaining, but exhausting since you have to cross so many borders. Also, once you are outside of EU, there are still a couple of countries you have to cross before reaching Russia and their customs procedures might be a headache.
So, you are traveling from the United States, I strongly encourage you to just look for the cheapest plane tickets directly to Russia (even if you have to change planes a couple of times) and save yourself some troubles.

Shrimp, you purchased some good solutions right here. commute to Russia and Germany is extremely diverse. Germany calls for few situations, and is a good position to commence in case you probably did not commute in yet another usa earlier. Russia, i believe, may assist you journey extra freedom in words of fee and shortage of economic constraints, notwithstanding it calls for some roots contained in the country - someone sharing your activity which will spend time with you, a kin who will take you in, or information of the language. I propose you commence with a a lot less complicated vacation to Germany, and be conscious the way it is going, and what you want. in a while, head to Russia, and my advice isn't to do it on my own, genuinely no longer first time you pass.
