Basically, the Cuban Missile Crisis was the closest that we've ever come to annihilating the earth. The Russians wanted to install ballistic missiles in Cuba, one of their satellite nations. The US felt that was way too close to us. Any missile launched from Cuba could hit anywhere here. The US already had missiles in Turkey, closer than Cuba is to us, but wouldn't allow the Russians to have weapons there. So when Russia was shipping the missiles there, the US threatened to launch our missiles, and came very close to doing so. Eventually, Russia backed off and pulled their ships back, I think.

The Soviet Union (communists, now dissolved) placed missiles in Cuba capable of reaching some major cities in the United States. It is generally regarded as the time when tensions between the US and the Soviet Union were at their highest, threatening to ignite a nuclear war. It was, however, resolved, much to the credit of John F. Kennedy.

The first thought that comes to mind is the Cuban missile crisis, when we blockaded the Russians from arming Cuba. It was a tense standoff; we came closer to nuclear war than most people know.
