My older cousin, who just graduated, was born premie, also. My dad held her in his hand when she was 2 hours old! She may be shorter than me(she's 18 and I'm 13) but she's normal(maybe a bit strange) so I guess premies are normal.

Yes, my aunt had a baby girl (Skye) that was 3 1/2 months premature. She weighed 1 lb. and 12 oz. and was just a foot long. She stayed in the hospital for about 2 months, where she was put on all kinds of monitors and respirators for a little while. She was allowed to go home, but she was still on oxygen. We couldn't see her for a really long time, but she's ok now and she's actually 5 years old!! Tell your cousin that even though the odds seem impossible, she can't lose hope on her baby; she just has to keep praying for her and loving her.

YES!
My daughter was born 14 weeks early weighing in at only 1 pound 3 ounces. She is now almost 3 years old and doing wonderfully. She is still petite, as most preemies, or in her case micro-preemies as their called, are. She is only 22 lbs. now and in 12 month clothing. The first few days are the most critical. Once she's able to breathe on her own, she'll do much better. It's very important that your cousin talk to her and listen to everything the nurses tell her. Also - she should check out the march of dimes website - as they have a ton of valuable information. Their website is: marchofidimes.com
Good luck and I'll be praying for your cousin and her baby,
Kelly

My brother's wife had a little boy 3 months or so early. He was born 1 lb. he lived until he was 5 lbs. They were getting ready to send him home and they put in a trachea and he had a heart attack and died. It really sucks when a baby dies. The survival rate is surprisingly high on premies anymore. Good luck with your cousin. Hope all is well!

Yes, I have. My twin girls were 10.5 weeks premature and weighed 2lb 7oz and 2lb 3oz and they were both 14 inches long. They spent 9 weeks in the NICU(Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). One of them had to have her first surgery at 22 hours old and a second one at 7.5 months old. The first 6 weeks were very touch and go for both of them. They stopped breathing and their hearts stopped several times. They are now 4 years old, in perfect health and have no residual side effects from being born so early.

alll my brothers were premature. One was one month, and the other two were two months early. The ones born at seven months don't have their lungs fully developed yet, so they had to be in incubators and take stereroids to strengthen their lungs before they could get out, even then, when we took them home they had to have monitors with them borrowed from the hospital to monitor their hearts and make sure they were doing fine. Usually, the baby premature is just weaker because their organs aren't ready, and the lungs are usually the last to develop. But I always hear that premature babies turn out ok.

Nobody in my immediately family has ever had a premature baby, but my husband's stepbrother was born premature. I forget how far along he was when he was born, but I know it was in the beginning of the second trimester. He was 1 lb. and about the size of a Barbie doll. He's fine now...in his early 20s, but he is a little slow, mentally.

My sister had her daughter 8 weeks early and she was only 2 pounds. She had a hole in her heart, couldn't eat or breathe on her own and had to be kept in the incubator for weeks. As she got older she also had lots of feeding problems. Now she's almost 4, has had open heart surgery to correct her heart problems and the docs found that she had celiac disease as well which was the cause of her feeding problems. She's finally growing and thriving though!
