I am going to file a provisional patent - any tips from people who have done this?

Question

I talked with a good attorney who gave me some good info. but I am going on my own (cheaper). Is an attorney necessary? Should I go provisional first? When should I do the patent search in DC? Should I pitch my idea to companies once I am patent pending? Lots of questions!!!

I have never personally done this but I found some great sources that should answer your questions...

NOLO is a great, free informational site. Also, be sure to read what the USPTO (United States Patent & Trademark Office) has to say about patents.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can. Here are some book titles that are relevant:
