A true shotgun house is usually very narrow when viewed from the front, but usually runs fairly deep on a narrow lot. Depending on the depth of the house, there are usually three or four rooms running front to back and most are the width of the house. The front door is usually offset to either the left or right corner and archways and doors between the rooms line up with the front door. The back door usually lines up too, hence the opportunity to shoot straight through the house from front to back.
Front to back, the traditional first floor layout was parlor, dining room, and kitchen. Stairs to the second floor ascended from the middle room (dining room) to the second story where there was usually a bedroom front and back and a bathroom in the middle. the bathroom, hallway between the bedrooms, and the stairwell occupied the same footprint as the dining room below.
As families grew, it was not unusual for the parents to make the dining room their bedroom and relegate the kids to the hot upstairs. This didn't do much for privacy, but then again, the kids went to bed early in those days.
Good luck with your search for information.

A shot gun house is a house with like a center hall way, rooms are off to each side or one side of this hallway, You can shoot a shot gun thru the house from the front door right out the back door, hence shotgun house.
