Reformatting will create a new INDEX file on your drive. In doing so the INDEX file will be empty and have no iformation about the files you once had.
The INDEX file is usually placed near the center cyclinders (tracks) of the drive. This makes file access a bit faster. The INDEX file contains the file name, file size, file type and other file information and 'pointers' to the location, i.e. starting block, of the file.
As long as your drive has no hardware problems, like a bad disk surface, this should fix your problem. But remember you'll have no files left, including your OS.

NO. Do not format your file system. That does fix alot but this is a much deeper error.
If chkdsk isnt fixing the errors assuming you have the /f parameter specified, the disk is almost certainly failing or your computer is generating errors and writing them to the disk.
Do this.
Boot with your windows CD and when it asks goto a recovery console
type CHKDSK /R and wait.. hours
if it finds bad sectors its probably about time to replace the disk
if it doesnt and you keep getting index errors, something is going wrong, probably with the memory (Bit Errors) or the IDE controller.

Reformatting will wipe out your entire file system not just the errors.
If you reforrmat you hard drive make sure that you have backups of the personal files that you want to keep, the install disk for your Operating system, and all the drivers for the hardware in your computer.

If these are Windows file errors, use your recovery CD for Windows.. This will not erase your data.
If you have a Dell, you can restore your operating system to the last known date that it functioned properly, automatically with their Restore, in Programs.. Not sure about other brands.
You've already been told Do Not Re-Format, unless you are online with a tech. I just went through this. Online with India last Sat.. for 4 hours, running every check. Finally got the right error message for the tech. Had to re-format. Note, could not load Windows. Lost every damn thing I had , except my backups and recovery software.
India finally took control of my PC and reinstalled the entire operating system remotely. That took an hour from a tech.
I did have warranty.

It should. Did chdsk find any physical damage on the drive(s)? It it did, then no, they are screwed. If it didn't, there's a very good chance that reformatting (do the normal one, not the quick one) will fix the problem.

Its possible it will correct your problem BUT if the drive is going out it will not get any better after you format your drive and windows begins loading if it is acting funny and you will know. Then I would prolly replace the drive.
