You should hire a professional carpet cleaner, it doesn't cost much, but make sure they don't use any kind of soap, it will only attract more dirt and cling to that smell.

Steam cleaning alone will not remove cat urine. I am a professional carpet cleaner and have found an excellent product that anyone can buy. It is "OdoBan", and is sold at hardware stores and Sam's. Use it on the surface of the carpet as directed on the lable, pull the carpet up and spray it on the back of the carpet generously, remove the carpet pad, and spray the product (or bleach) on the slab or sub flooring. If you use bleach, be careful not to get it on the carpet, and do not step in it. Replace the pad after all is dry. Put carpet back down, have the carpet professionally cleaned with a truckmount unit. Ask the carpet cleaner to use an enzyme to digest the remainder of the cat urine bacteria. If you still detect odor after the carpet is dry, Use the "OdoBan" again.

Steam cleaning alone does not take away cat urine. After cleaning the carpet I use 2 products to eliniate the odor. I use an enzyme that actually conumes the bacteria and particles, and a urine neutralizer to neutralize the odor.
Deoderants merely mask the odor. Ask at your local carpet cleaner about this type of cleaning, or carpet machine rental stores should have these types of products available. Read the directions because these products need to be color fast tested to make sure it will not discolor your carpet. And as far as the stain the cat urine itself may have left on your carpet, these stains are very difficult to remove because of the amonia in urine. Depends on what type and color of carpet you have.

No, but professional carpet cleaners have a product that will eliminate the odor. You can try to neutrilize the smell with white vinegar before steam cleaning, then when it is dry from the steam cleaning apply a heavy spray of OUT which can be purchased in the pet section at Walmart......it may work, but you may also be able to detect a slight odor of cat urine, however professionals can eliminate the odor.

From experience I can say it doesnt get rid of it. The place I live in seemed like new till the cat picked up the scent of a cat previously in it. Just so you know, the oder can stay in the carpet for a very long time. So as another person allready mentioned, its better to remove the carpet and padding. In some cases it will likely still be in the wood.

Depends how bad it is. You may need to purchase an enzyme solution that is made just for eliminating pet odors from urine. You can find such a thing at a pet store. If not, they should be able to order some or tell you where to get it. Clean your carpet AFTER you treat it with that solution, but I would wait a few days.

It might if you ad something to the water specifically for getting rid of cat urine (i.e. Odor X). Check at the local pet store and see what products they offer.
