If it lands on the chalk (a fly ball) then it usually is considered to be fair. If it is a liner past the 1st baseman, it has to stay fair until it passes 1st base.

An execption would be last night which I assume you were watching. Last night in San Francisco, everyone agreed the umpire made the wrong call. Mark Texieria of the texas rangers hit a line drive to right with 2 outs and the bases loaded. the Giants were leading by 2 runs and would've lost the lead if the call had been made correctly. The Umpire ruled it was foul though not only did it clear touch the chalk - it also landed on the field before the chalk. The rangers then lost the game after texiera was ejected and his replacement got out to end the game.

If a ball hits into fair territory it is in play if it rolls in foul territory.

If it goes over the first base or third base bag after hitting the foul line it's fair. If it goes out before it's foul

Its a fair ball, its just like the foul pole. If it hits the foul pole then its a homerun.

Like in EVERY sport, the line is in. Also the "foul" pole is technically in fair territory.
