You *can* give a baby juice, but it's not a good idea. It has too much sugar and calories for a baby with a small stomach. Give whole fruit (or grated, in the case of hard fruits like apples) instead. It is more nutritious.

To be honest, the best thing would be to not give your 6mo old juice. It is something that children do not need. Juice rots the teeth, even when the child is so young they dont have any yet. Also if a babies, toddlers, children get to much juice, it can lead to diabetes. A little juice wont hurt and you should dilute it 50% juice, 50% water. Just dont go over board. Apple juice is the safest to start with. I think OJ is one of the last to indroduce, because of the acid. Oh, one other thing to think about before introducing it, try to make sure your 6mo old eats vegtables. I say that because fruits are sweet and if you give them those first, then they tend to not want vegtables,.

Gerber makes something called Splashers. They have apple, grape, kiwi strawberry, etc. If you feel like paying the money (gerber does send coupons in the mail, though), they are good jiuces. They are SUPER-diluted, by my daughter loves them. I think they taste more like water than juice, but for kids, that's a good thing.
But of course, you can always dilute your own juices with water, by at least 50%. Just make sure to get juices that say "No Added Sugar" or "Unsweetened."

But personally, I wouldn't give a 6 month old juice too often. Really, all the liquids they can drink in a day should really only be formula or breast milk. BUT, it won't hurt if you give a little juice with some solids once a day or so.

Apple juice is a good one to start with. Make sure it's Juicy Juice...it's the best with no perservatives. Dilute the juice half and half with water. If they start with it this way, they never know the difference. I have a 3 yr old and he still can't tell the difference. They just get much less sugar with this way. I wouldn't give the juice in their bottle, give them a sippy cup from the start of juice. A six month old is old enough for a sippy cup.

It is ok to give them diluted juice (about 50/50 or 25 juice/75 water to start) maybe once a day. Pear and apple are good to start with. Don't give orange or citrus juices as they contain alot of acid and will cause major diaper rash! Don't make it a regular thing though. Juices have a lot of sugar in them and you don't want your child ending up with bottle mouth. Never put them in bed with a bottle of milk or juice. Water is great and always readily available!

I can only tell you what I have learned from my extremely anal wife and raising our young children. Whole milk, or breast milk is always best, but if you are going to juice choose one that has NO ADDED sugars, the best bet is to use the Gerber brand, or Apple and Eve I believe is what we use. Dilute 50:50 with water and they should be fine, just don't go overboard, there is always a lot of sugar in fruit, so that'll keep'm up all night. We usually only give juice early, and use milk and plain water at night. Again, I can't stress using a quality 100% juice, not something with a lot of added sugar, or from concentrate!!!!!

He should only have juice once a day and it has to be apple juice. Dilute half water, half juice. Apple juice is the easiest for children to consume.

My son just turned 7 months and I've been giving him apple juice (3ozs.water with 1oz. juice) since he was 3 months old. He gets thirsty so I let him sip on as much as he wants, whenever he wants. Some days he's a very hungry boy and eats tons of big boy food and bottles. Some days, he prefers more sips than anything else. Don't worry about your baby not getting enough nutrition from having extra fluids, that's rubbish. Also, please don't give your baby that nasty Gerber juice, it's awful and sweeter tasting than the stuff we drink. I use Tropicana 100% Apple Juice with no sugar added, you can buy it in a 6 pack from Wal-Mart. My sons Pediatrician, who is the father of 5 happy, healthy children, gave me this advice and it has worked wonderfully for my son. Good Luck and God Bless.

I started with prune if there was a problem with hard poopy. Other than that pear, grape, and apple are great starters. I always added one once of water for every three ounces of juice. For one thing they taste too strong for new taste buds and it also makes sure the juice won't cramp up the babies belly.
