Welding Jobs *can* pay very well depending on what part of the country you are doing it in...
AND what type
AND your level of expertice
we hear stories of guys that worked the Alaska Pipeline and came back bought a house and retired on the income from investing that money...
right now in Canada (the really cold part of canada) there is a huge boom in the Oil industry... $125K/yr for simple laborers... imagine what they are paying skilled welders...
Community Colleges are a great place to get certified and to then move into good welding gigs (they usually have job boards)...
some types of welding *can* be dangerous and over time can take thier toll on you physically...
Avoid the scam of *underwater welding schools* they are expensive and there are not really that much of a need for underwater welder's (The welder's out there that do it, are the ones that get called for the job... there are many, many certifed uderwater welder's that act as helpers... the ones that monitor the guy underwater that is doing the welding... they don't get paid as well as the guy underwater... you pay your dues for a long time in that field)
Another option is to get your own truck mounted rig and do field work and repairs... out here (Los Angeles) they can charge $150/hr... minimum of two hours...
a friend of mine has two rigs... and he pays his second rig guy $75/hr

Generally, no. Yes all these people will say "my buddy/friend/neighbor this/that/ underwater/overhead/upsidedown/alaskanpipeline/offshore makes $140k/$110k/$100k/$90k/$80k/$70k/$40hr/$35hr/$30hr, but the truth is something entirely different. The welding school recruiters are just like military recruiters, promising big things. I can tell you first hand, yes, a jam up welder can make 6 figure incomes or $40hr, but the fact is he's not on yahoo answers telling you how much you can make. His hood is down or the lights are out and hes asleep. The far far far majority of welding jobs (I mean 95%+) are $10-$18(20ish if your lucky) and involve pulling a mig trigger. Hopefully you get a machine with a trigger hold. Sorry to burst the, I'm a good welder I'm worth $35hr/$120 per diem bubble.

YES. I have a friend that works at a plant that builds Ocean Oil Rigs. The hardest part of the job is the heat. I think his starting pay was about 20$ an hour for the first 40hours of the week, then he was paid 30$ an hour for time and a half. The worst part about it is working 7 12hour shifts... but its 84 hours... LOTS of money if you can stand it.

If you are certified it will pay pretty well. It is one of the better paying trades. No certification or experience is bad news for you. Get certified at a community college.
