It depends on how old your children are, but I would be as honest as possible. Let them know that their dad has an illness, and that he had to get treatment. They need to know that he is getting better, and that he will be back, and that he loves them very much. Good luck to your family during this time.

If your kids are too young to understand
about addictions, then best thing to say to
them is "Daddy got sick, so he went to a place
to get better. When he comes back home
he will be much happier"
If you have older children (age 9+)
it might be best to go into more
specific details of the negatives
of using alcohol (or drugs ). It might
make them less likely to use as a
minor, if you help them understand
the bad conseqences of dependency.
Best Wishes for successful rehab

depends on the age of the children and if he has ever spent awhile away from home
younger children just let them know dad is gone and will return soon.
older children if they know he has a problem let them know he went to go get help from a doctor and will return when he gets better.

Depending on their age, explain that he had a serious problem that he needed help to fix. He was brave and asked for help because he loved his family and wanted to be the best dad he could be for them. Also, tell the husband of the conversation and maybe the idea that they know and have expectations of him getting better might add to his motivation. Best of Luck to you all!!!

I'm sure they had an adea that something was different that normal with dad. The way he acted the way he treated them and you. I'd be honest and tell them dad went to a hospital because his is very sick and the doctors there are going to help him. Dad loves us and misses us and will be home soon.

it depends on how old your children are, but being honest is the best thing to do. Find a way that doesn't demean their father, but they have a right to know what's going on. Addictions are hereditary and knowing that their father had an addiction problem will heighten their awareness about substance abuse and what it can do to you.

It depends on how small they are. If they are like 10, then tell them the truth. If they are 5, tell them Dad took a little trip and will be back soon.

Depends on their age but something like:
Daddy had a problem -he was sick- and he needed to get help. He's trying to get better because he loves us and wants to be a good daddy. I hope daddy gets well and when he comes home we can have a happy family.
