If you go to control panel, under "Classic View" there is an icon called "Sounds and Audio Devices", when you open it, there is a checkbox on the window that pops up that says "Place volume icon in system tray".
Under "Catagory" view, click on "Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices" then click on "Sounds and Audio Devices" to open a window that will have the checkbox for the volume icon.
If that doesnt work, I had a problem when I reloaded my computer and, because my audio drivers were not reinstalled, the volume icon checkbox wasnt available. If that happens, check that you reinstalled your audio drivers and then try again.

Go to the Control Panel and open Sound, Speech, and Audio Devices. Once there, click on Sounds and Audio Devices. A box should appear with some sliders and boxes. Click the one that says "Place volume icon in the taskbar" and then hit either Apply or OK (it shouldn't make a difference which you choose).
