When I was first married my husband joined the Marine Corps and we were sent to Meridian, Mississippi, for him to go to school. This was in the spring of 1977. He found a trailer for us to rent but I had nothing to put together a house with (dishes, linens, etc.). I went to the Navy Relief Society at the base there and asked if they had household packs to loan. They did not but the lady I spoke with said she'd see what she could do.

Later that day my hubby came home with a GREAT BIG bag full of dishes, pots and pans, sheets, towels, all the necessities. There was even a portable radio and 8-track player with tapes (ok... now I've dated myself.) I found out later that the lady I spoke with contacted the other military wives she volunteered with and they all took things out of their homes and put together my hospitality bag.

When we left I cleaned everything, packed it back up and took it back to the Navy Relief Society. They told me they were going to leave it there for other young wives who arrived with nothing as I did.

I have never forgotten the kindness of those ladies and I have tried to help others in the same way through the years.

If any of you ladies are out there now, let me say Thank You again, from the bottom of my heart. I'll never forget you!

There was the ticket agent in Malaga who arranged for a wheelchair to meet me at the gate in Amsterdam. I was travelling alone, walking with a cane, and had not asked for any special treatment. I didn't know until I was met.

Another ticket agent, in Jordan, moved me from tourist to business class.

Then there was the stewardess on the flight from New York who upgraded me to first class when she saw what a tight fit the tourist class seat was for me.

None of these strangers had to do anything special for me, I saw none of them ever again. People are just generally nice.

In 1980 my 5 yr old daughter & I were on a back road driving with some friends when she told me she needed to pee. There was no place private enough for her & she was too little to wait, so I told my friends that I had to ask someone to use their bathroom. My friends said there was no way anyone would let us in, but the elderly lady who answered the 1st door we knocked on said yes! We even visited for awhile & she showed me her photo album.

It was the night that income taxes had to be post marked and a man bought me a stamp so that I wouldn't have to stand in line for a long time.

When I was homeless and on the streets a passerby offered me a rain coat because it was beginning to rain. That person showed not only kindness by mercy.

Asked me what I wanted out of life. Then after I told him, he told me to do what I had to in order to get it. Today, I am almost there.
