It looked like a BIG black ant and as I stepped on it tons of living babies escaped. Scared me to death, but my family says it can't happen. What type of spider can this happen in, and has anyone else had this happen? Thanks! :o)

Thanks! I searched it and it came back as a type of WOLF Spider. I live in NH and this type is rare here but at least I can show my family I wasn't sleep walking :o) Thanks so much everyone! It totally freaked me out. It was at 4:00 a.m. too. :|

The babies are really on the mother's back. I had one in the house one time and I used the fly swatter to kill the spider, only to have what seemed like 50 babies scurry out! Fortunately, I grabbed the bug spray and took care of the babies.

Oh my God! That's terrifying.

Actually, I have no experience with that, but a couple weeks ago I went to use my brother's bathroom and a spider about the size of my palm (I have small hands, but still) was lying around in the bath tub. I made my dad kill it and stood outside freaking out, and it sat there for a while, dead, while we all walked by in fear and amazement. Then my cleaning lady came and she actually removed it from the bathtub, and now I feel bad for her whenever she comes over and have apologized incessently. But anyway, that was useless, but it just still scares the crap out of me.

Good luck. I believe you.

The babies were huddled on the mothers back. They are very tiny and gather together on the mothers back, and for the most part almost unseen. When you stepped on the mother, you killed alot of the babies too, but alot of them escaped.

Wolf spiders are one type of spider that carry their young on their backs.

You are not alone, i sprayed a spider with furniture polish and it was pregnant. The baby spiders went in all directions. They were protected by the mother. I live in the SW and it happens all the time!!!

I am not sure what type of spider it was, but here in WV they carry babies in a sac on their back, it may appear that the babies came out of the spider but in fact the sac they carry is what they came out of.

Spiders lay eggs, so that is probably not possible. Maybe it was not a spider? Are you sure it had 8 legs?

Or maybe it was carrying the eggs when you stepped on it?

I had this happen in WI 1991 but it didn't look like a wolf spider because it was shiny jet black. Now I wonder what it really was????????????????
