Sarah spends 1/4 of her income for transportation, 1/6 of her income for food, and 1/3 of her income for rent and utilities. What fractional part of Sarah's income is left for all her other expenses?

Can you please explain how to do this problem? Thanks

Find a common denominator and add all of the fractions together. The common denominator of 4, 6, and 3 is 12. 1/4 becomes 3/12, 1/6 becomes 2/12, and 1/3 becomes 4/12. Now add them all together to get 9/12. Since 12/12 would be her whole income, the stuff that is left is 12/12 - 9/12, which is 3/12, or 1/4.

Add all the fractions of income she spent together
1/6+1/4+1/3 =9/12 She spent 9/12 or 3/4 of her income. Her income is represented by 1 subtract 9/12 from 1 and the fraction of her income left is 3/12 or 1/4.

you need to make all the fractions the same kind, at the moment you have thirds, quarters and sixths. use your times tables. so 1/4 = 3/12
1/6 = 2/12
1/3 = 4/12
you should be able to work it out from there, you need to add them all up, 3/12+2/12+4/12=? that will give you the total of her spend, what's left is for all her other expenses.

i'm not very good at explaining, sorry, hope it helps.

(1/4= 6/24 1/6= 4/24 1/3=8/24)

6/24+ 4/24+ 8/24= 18/24 reduced to 9/12 if dividing by 2 reduced to 3/4 when divided by 3 leaving you with 1/4 for he other expenses

okay. Best thing is to compare them all evenly. Like this:

1/4 = 3/12
1/6 = 2/12
1/3 = 4/12

add them and you get 9/12 which leave her with 3/12 left which when you break it down = 1/4

hope that helps

i THINK it's 1/4...if u need to show work u simplify the fractions and add it, u get 3/4 and she would have 1/4 because she used 3/4 of it...
