When I turn on the hot water in the kitchen, the faucet starts 'humming' - only hot water and only in the kitchen. Any ideas?

It is NOT the pipes - it is the faucet.

Thanks Bob, that sounds like it.

Humming comes from a loose washer at end of stem. Turn off water dissemble faucet valve. Tighten washer screw, if worn turn over and tighten. Water banging is caused from . When shut off and water hits end of pipe. I call your prop the singing washer song.

It is probably a calcium build up inside the faucet, causing the washers or "O" rings to act like a reed in a clarinet. If you feel handy try to rebuild the faucet, if it is an inexpensive faucet to begin with just replace it.

The hot water pipes probably aren't securely fastened as they make their way through the house and are causing the pipes to vibrate causing that hum.

I think, or they could be purring becuase they are happy you are there, but my first impression is you're missing some pipe clamps.

You need what they call a "shock absorber", (or dampener), put in-line with the hot water feed line.
