You were taught correctly. Some drivers think they can get through before the light turns red, if they speed up. But they can't- not always. They defy authority. It's a wonder they ever got their license to drive. I agree that it makes no sense, but some people just don't make sense. Your question really isn't as dumb as you think, it's those drivers who are dumb. I wish they'd explain themselves. Keep on with what you do, sweetie. Keep alert, relax any tenesion, concentrate on what you're doing. If you have any more driving questions, let me know.

yellow light is supposed to mean slow down. if you are too close to the intersection when it turns yellow, it is safe to continue and pass. if you are far enough to stop, you must do so in order to avoid accidents. however, most of us here are too impatient and dont want to wait for the next green light, so some people will just speed through and make it seem that they didnt have enough distance to stop.

yellow, or amber, is the colour that comes before red. it doesn't mean slow down, it means stop if it is safe to do so, but if you are too close to the light to safely stop with having to slam on and cause a pile up behind you then you are entitled to drive through it.

in some countries you can get a traffic ticket for driving through an amber light if you should have been able to stop and not driven through it

HAHA! That's right. Most people don't wanna have to sit and wait at the red light. Also...I just got my liscense and I've come to find out that sometimes, you're going too fast to slow down and not stop in the intersection, so you just speed up more so you don't have to SLAM on the brake.

Hope this answers your question...God bless...

Yellow means"caution" or get ready to stop. The yellow light is to prepare the driver to stop since red is natually next. Most people are too impatient to wait forthe next green light, so they speed up to avoid this wait. Hope this helps.

Nope, that's not correct.

Green means go if it is safe to do so.

Yellow means stop unless it is unsafe to do so.

Red means stop.

When the light turns yellow, you are required to stop unless you would have to slam on your brakes to do so. In virtually all jurisdictions you will be cited if the light turns red before you get all the way through the intersection. People who speed up are trying to get through the intersection before it turns red.

Yellow does not mean slow down. It requires you to prepare to stop. You are permitted to proceed through a yellow light only if you cannot stop without causing a hazard (e.g. an accident or damaging your vehicle).

People speed up to try to make it through the intersection before the light turns red. I thought everyone did it.
