Because it didn't bring in many movie-goers. Theaters dropped it in favor of films that'd bring in more money.

The best guess I have is that Pierce Brosnan played against his type (hero/good guy) in the film, and audiences didn't accept him in the role (the poor showing of his previous film "The Tailor of Panama" might support this theory, although TToP was just a crappy film). The other reason might be that black comedy can be a tough sell at the box office (like the excellent "Suicide Kings").

It's too bad, because I really liked "The Matador" - I thought it was the best film out of the two dozen or so I watched at the Toronto International Film Festival last September.

It was time for it to move on. But most movies eventuallly get relesase on video.
