I'm moving from Fargo ND to Portland OR in a few weeks. My husband and I are moving by ourselves with a rental truck. We aren't taking much furniture and buying new stuff when we get there (we are taking a recliner, an end table, a disassemblable desk, a dresser, and MAYBE the kitchen table if there is room in the truck). I also have to move two seperate cages of guinea pigs (boys and girls, seven total).

I've never been to Portland before...what do I need to know? We are moving to southern Portland, near Tigard, Tualatin, etc. and my husband will be working in Newberg.

Any tips for moving cross-country?

First, do you already have a place to live when you get there? Too many people show up here in Florida and expect us to figure out where they are going to live.
Pack a raincoat and umbrella for everyone except the animals. It rains a lot there, and it is cold rain.
Drive carefully, do not cut off semi's, and have a good trip.

Make sure that your important documents are readily available in case you need information for rental applications, utility hookups, etc.. I have seen too many people pack their information in the front of the truck and then have trouble remembering things like credit information, references, etc..

Good luck with your move.
