My daugter was born 3 1/2 weeks early (I had severe toxemia) her doctor detected a heart murmmur at her 2 week appt and sent us to see a cardiologist- he said that her septum between the walls of heart hadn't closed like most newborns. He said to come back when she is 18 mos old and he said he will have expected it to close. If it does not close the will have to do surgery and close it. Does anyone else have a baby that had this? if so did theirs close?

Im assuming you are speaking about either an ASD or a VSD..One is the upper two chambers and the other is the lower two chambers...In most cases this is something that closes on its own...You didnt mention that your daughter is taking any medication for the condition so Im going to assume that she isnt..this basically tells me that the hole is very small. At your next appointment your cardiologist will do another echo and see whats up with the hole...If it has not closed up he will take it from there..chances are he will give it another year and monitor it..it should close on its own...

I had boy-girl twins born 3 weeks early. My little girl had a heart murmur. At one month old it was still there, so we did a sonogram of her heart. Same thing - the septum hadn't closed. Doctor said if she still had the murmur at one year, we'd look into more. At nine months, it was gone. It was scary, but I guess it's not that uncommon. She never had any ill-effects from it and she's 18 months old now. Hope this helps.

my daughter was also born with a heart murmur. She went to a cardiologist as 3 days old and again at 6 months and again at 18 months. Her problems self-corrected themselves. The heart is an amazing organ.
Good Luck, I hope everything goes well for your daughter

Yep, my son was born with the same thing. Doctor's said he had a 75% chance of having to have heart surgery to close it. It was a moderate size hole in the heart. They call it a V.S.D. . He is five now, and it has almost closed completely. He will be fine, and will have no surgery. Good luck.... :)

The thing about the heart murmers is that they can start at any age... and stop just as quickly.
