I personally don't hate you, and certainly can't speak for anyone, but I will tell you this: I was a "new waver" in the 80's- I was a Cure, Depeche Mode and Smiths freak. I found that when I turned 14 or so, I gravitated towards certain styles and music. I didn't "decide" to be that way. I am not saying that YOU are, but MANY self-proclaimed "Goths" of "Emos" are TOTAL posers. If you buy your plaid skirts- complete with giant safety pins at Hot Topic- YOU ARE A POSER! Back in 86' I had to go to the Sali ( salvation army ) to find plaid skirts. I had to go to flea markets and church bazaars to find giant safety pins. What I am trying to say is that being "new wave" or "goth" isn't a fashion- it's an attitude that you come across, not copy. I am now 34 years old- I am married, live in the 'burbs, my husband and I are medical professionals and make 6 figures a year- and you know what? I am far more "goth" or whatever you want to call it in my $200 Banana Republic clothes than many of you ever could be in your cookie-cutter Bettie Page Hot Topic baby dolls shirts! Because I am the real thing. It's an attitude. You either got it, or you don't.

victim_of_fun is right on the money. It's not the goths people hate, it's the posers; the ones who try to be different, yet end up looking like everyone else. The ones who buy their clothes at Hot Topic (which is owned by The Gap, by the way) and call themselves "goth." Apparently the "true goths," the ones who make their own rebel clothing and actually have the right mindset to be a goth, make fun of these kids.

I don't hate goths. Actually, my best friend is goth. I do think its a bit silly that when I asked a goth why he wears all black, he said "its because I'm a non-conformist and rebelling against society." I looked around and saw 15 other kids dressed like him! I told him it wasn't working.

Why be Goth?
Are you trying to be different? How different are you if you can be CATEGORIZED (as being a Goth)? It's just a another niche of society.
I'd rather be striving for something (great health, great income, great wealth, winning running or bicycle races, great friends, having a well-adjusted family, witty charm, etc) than to see how many black clothes I can wear, how many places I can pierce myself, or how much angst I can show others.
Don't worry, be happy.

I don't hate goths. What's the point in hating someone who wears black and/or dark colors, has a different personality, and listens to a different style of music. People are people.

Only a few people really dislike goths. Most just have to have the concept of 'goth' explained to them and they're okay with it.

I don't hate goths. Who hates goths? I didn't even know they were hated. People are just ignorant. They are afraid of what they don't know about.

It's not the Goth we hate, it's when we look to check you out or admire your look and you turn to us and ask " WTF are you looking at?!" I personally love anything different, but I can't stand people who are just plain rude. My question is ... why do you dress to get attention, then get beligerent when people look?
