You will need to study from a book initially, to pick up the basics. But after that, watching Russian TV and listening to radio is a very good way of learning. Especially if you can watch films in English but with Russian subtitles.

The new directors coming out of Russia and the creativity of their cinema artists is very compelling. They have fresh ideas and concepts that avoid the naive plots you may see in lsome of the recent stateside films. Russians like a good story, and they don't like to give it away until the end, that's a great method for film making. Even their music videos are intriguing, gorgeous women aside, of course ;-)

I was curious to see NIght Watch this year but it seemed to disappear from theatres way too fast!
so yes, I am intending to watch Russian movies more. I have seen Tarkovsky films (GREAT) and also the one "Mother and Son" (which I didn't care for) - but they are all very serious. I hope the Russians will do some comedies at some point.

Good movies go beyond language. Russians like Pudovkin and Eisenstien were considered masters and first great thinkers of Editing theory.
I recently saw 'Moscow Does Not Believe In Tears' by Vladimir Menshov and thought it was outstanding
Current movies there seem to be frivolous. However, when they start getting serious again, I would love to watch.

While I haven't seen a Russian movie yet, I would watch one, I enjoy any foreign films as long as they have sub-titles...first chance I get I will definitely rent one to see what you're talking about...

I learned Russian in the Army and would welcome Russian language movies into the US. The problem is, I may be the only one in the entire country who would.

They say the sign of a great film is one you can follow in another language, or even on mute.
