I thought they all left and are now living in Houston or something like that.

Probably because of TV and pop culture in general. There are similar comparisons wherever there is a large stereotype. For example; Many people believe that everyone from San Francisco is gay or that all people from Utah are Mormons or that California is one long beach and we all have blond hair and surf or that everyone in West Virginia is married to their cousin and sleeps with their sisters and brothers. My favourite is when I'm travelling outside the country and people comment on the fact that I "Seem really nice for an American" or that I "Don't seem like an American at all." I then ask how many Americans they've met and many say they haven't really met any, just seen them on TV and in Movies or know someone who knows an American.

It's mainly just ignorance and stereotyping.

I live in Louisiana and moved away at one time but now am back again. When I moved away, I worked with a lady that asked if we really had alligators living in our front yards and rowed in boats to work!!!!! How ignorant are people.

Maybe. I don't think that way, but I live in east Texas so I know about Louisiana anyway.

I get that from people too. They just don't believe I am from New Orleans unless I start saying "y'all" or "dawlin" .
