that the victims/areas of Hurricane Rita, have been pushed to the back burner and forgotten about? Being from Southwest Louisina, this has bothered me from the beginning.

Lake Charles, Cameron, Holly Beach, Beaumont, and so many others were hit extremely hard and the devisation is heartwrenching. But you don't hear anything on the news about the effect of Rita, only Katrina. I would think it being a major petrochemical refining center, that there would be more support and help. I just feel the victims from Rita, and even Wilma deserve more and shouldn't be treated like the redheaded stepchild and forgotten. Anyone else have feelings on it.

I feel for you, i am from Katrina in New Orleans. I just responded on another question about what goes unnoticed in the media and my response was all the victims in Mississippi, Chalmette, La Pass Christian(nothing left). The fact is we haven;t heard about them because the day after the hurricane the citizens pulled together along with the police, mayor, firefighters whose possessions and houses were taken from them by a tidal wave and started rebuilding and helped each other out.(not like New Orleans whose firefighters and police went AWOL and the mayor could not be reached for 2 days) Lake Charles and Beaumont and all hit with Rita and Wilma got the short end of the stick because everyone was already manipulating the system and for one bad apple ruins the rest for the people that need it. Unfortuntaly New Orleans has received all the attention being in a mayoral race, flooded out, dead people floating (that seems to grab more attention than a woman standing on one piece of wood that used to be her house) in water and the residents acting like animals and the crime causing National Guard troops to babysit. It is sad and I wish you and your family the best. It is the damn media. I congratulate everyone from Mississippi and the Gulf Coast for doing an exceptional job at joining together and becoming a community that helps each other out. I wish my city did the same.

Think also upon 9/11. The Pentagon was hit as well, and it took several days before it could be made inhabitable again, but we saw almost nothing of that. And the reason for this is there is no news footage of it, which means there was nothing to be played on infinite loops on all the major television networks whilst some sappy Jewel song played in the background.

The media is a *business*, and that means they need to report on what will get peoples' attention, because peoples' attention is what sells their products (and their sponsors' products). I suspect that Katrina was such a big thing, such a drain on peoples' emotions, that by the time Rita and the others hit, people who weren't directly affected by it didn't want to think about it anymore, and the media adapted to the new craving for news about anything *but* hurricanes. The customer is always right, and all that.

after Katrina, when kanye west said that bush didn't care about blacks, the media went crazy, trying to put the focus on the fact that so many of the victims were poor blacks. I guess rita adn Wilma didn't have enough black victims to get any attention, not to mention the fact that all those telethins and fund raisers for Katrina left the everybody too broke to donate to more hurricane victims. Of course, i don't recall anyone ever hosting a telethn for hurricane victims before, and Florida has been devestated by hurricanes every year for as long as I can remember

I certainly feel for the victims of all natural disasters, and that includes earthquakes, tornadoes (which my part of the country has), floods, and hurricanes. I agree that Katrina (specifically New Orleans) has received the majority of the news and hype from the media. I do not mind my tax dollars going to assist people devastated from natural disasters; however, a lot of the people from New Orleans seem to think that the taxpayers should support them for the rest of their lives. The biggest reason why New Orleans was so devastated was that (1) it is below sea level DA!, and (2) the politicians were too busy using the money for the nice things in life and not the necessary things (like the levy). My state has to match fed tax dollars for improvements like that. God bless all of the victims.

No more than the people of Katrina who are still with nothing, and there are plenty of them. The fact that other storms wiped out other people is unfortunate. Yet the size of Katrina is what sells papers and ad time on TV. People who are victims of smaller storms clearly are as important to the government as the TV ratings and press will allow.
Here's the bottom line for ya': if you are a victim of any natural disaster in this country, where the predominance of people are poor and the revenues from tax are low, then you are screwed.

I think it is because New Orleans is such a big city that the media couldn't get over it and think of the other areas that were affected by the other hurricanes. And I think we all know that the media picks and chooses the news according to what will sell their papers. The government is also probably media-influenced and hence never got around to the other hurricanes before and after Katrina which is sad.

yeah, to an extent.
the reason for focus on Katrina is the convenience of the Mayor, black race, devastation, and the government rolled into one chain reaction.
the Mayor is nothing special, seems his trademark is pointing fingers.
the race card was thrown again, surprise surprise.
the devastation is a natural occurrence, it isn't some new bizarre event we have yet to figure out. it was a well-known fact (among those who cared to be informed instead of blindly dependent) that the levies were no match for such power. the levies/flooding did more damage than Katrina. Mississippi was hit worse, but where was the fiasco? Mississippi picked up and moved on. New Orleans expected to be bottle-fed.
the government should not be in control of these situations, it should be back up. the only reason it was needed was b/c of the Mayor and Governor falling through. what's the point of delegating and employing regional officials if they cry to the Super?

THANK YOU CRIS!!!!! i applaud your response and am very appreciative of your perception and honesty!!! =)

After all the abuse that many of the hurricane victims have committed using taxpayers money,it should not detract from those that are still in need. Katrina and Rita are no longer front page news, and that does not sell papers or get ratings on the network newscasts. The abuse of FEMA cash cards are news makers and that's what we hear. Join the 21st century:-)

I Totally accept as true with you. There are SO many couples in the market that might provide whatever to end up pregnant, and cannot. Yet here is these kinds of ladies performing like being pregnant is the worst viable factor that would ever occur to them of their lives and all they fear approximately is what's going to i inform my moms and dads, i am gonna get fats, who is the father, and many others. It's real unhappy that those folks are so careless. A useful condom would have avoided their concerns. Thought oh good, he forgot the condom, no biggy one time aint gonna harm not anything. two weeks later off he went and ended up marrying my first-class pal. It wasn't a pair extra weeks later I discovered I was once pregnant. Of direction I was once scared out of my brain. And that's precisely what I did and I have an excessively completely satisfied and healthful eleven yr historic daughter to exhibit for it. It's something to emerge as within the predicament and take cost of it, however such a lot of folks emerge as on this predicament correct after an abortion, or after a being pregnant scare final month, or flip to listen to watching for recommendation on find out how to eliminate the child. Breaks my center.
