I think that anything that fuels a kid's imagination without exposing them to stuff beyond their capacity to handle is great. I mean, seriously, how many of us didn't at least fantasize about having magic/super powers at some point during our childhoods? No, I don't think that the last two books (OOTP and HBP) are designed for readers younger than 12 or so, but the first four books are fine. So long as you distinguish between reality and fantasy for your kids, I think it's more than fine.

The Harry Potter books are an excellant read for kids. There is nothing evil about them. The books are not crazy, just some people.

Here is what Christian author C.S. Lewis had to say about using magic in his children's books:

"Do you think I am trying to weave a spell? Perhaps I am; but remember your fairy tales. Spells are used for breaking enchantments as well as for inducing them. And you and I have need of the strongest spells that can be found to wake us from the evil enchantment of worldliness which has been laid upon us for nearly a hundred years."

Harry Potter is about the struggle between good and evil, and making right choices when the wrong ones would be so easy to make. How in Heaven's name can this be bad for our kids!?!?!

And any kid who waves a stick and says "Lumos", will probably realize pretty darn quickly that the magic in the books is NOT real, and they won't be sucked into wizardry as soon as they realize that it is just a story.

JK Rowling is an excellent writer.
A lot of Christains seem to freak out at the fact her writing is about wizardary and witchcraft, but most have never read the books or even seen the movies. If they had they would find out Harry's parents were killed by an evil man. Harry is on the side of good not evil. He comes from an abusive situation where he lives with is Aunt And Uncle who are mean to him every day of his life. It's about his struggle for answers and doing right.

Also, the "spells" they use in the movies and the books are merely latin words. These are NOT real spells or anything out of any satanic book.

For instance:Lumos

“Lumen” is Latin for light. “Luminosus” is Latin for “bright”. Produces light from the end of the caster’s wand.

Mobili-XXXXX

“Mobilis” is Latin for “moveable”. When XXXXX is replaced by an object, the object is forced to move.

The way I see it, it's making children want to read and enjoy reading instead of watchin TV. Think about it, TV is nothing but violence these days. Even children's shows. Then you have Soap Operas. You turn them on daily to see who's screwing whom. And then there is nudeness now on TV. Which is really the better choice?

Harry Potter is not bad. It is not restricting kids to learn and read about black magic and witchcraft, it is just letting kids have an opportunity to read books and learn enjoying reading many different genres. Do you want to force your kid to not read books you have never read yourself?. Who cares what the church says.

Harry Potter glorifies witchcraft. It doesn't matter that Harry's parents were killed by an evil man. Witchcraft can be both good or evil, so that is not even a consideration. Witchcraft is a scary thing if not used correctly.

not me, i love harry potter, and my kids do too. It doesn't preach witchcraft. It is just a story of a boy who has obstacles to overcome and has to make decisions for himself, and hope he can live with it.
Jus tlike all the other coming of age books.
The details are just more interesting.
