We can't boycot them just because they are communists. After all, everything we buy is from China and they are the biggest commies in the world. There was a time we felt strongly against communism, but it seems our allegiances are easily bought with cash and access to cheap goods. What gives??

We probably should end the embargo, it is the cuban exiles in this country that fight to keep it. And since they are concentrated in florida, and are an important voting bloc in a very important Presidential state, (remember 2000?), no politican is going to alienate them.
sorry, but it probably will stay until Castro dies.

Thoughtful question.

The real reason is that the very influential Cuban expatriate lobby in Florida despises Castro and any elected official who suggested rapprochement with Cuba is going to get pummeled.

Castro, for his part, is not really a very nice guy and the US has been at loggerheads with him since late 1959. This adds quite a long back taste to the whole matter, too.

The original embargo actually wasn't because Castro is a Marxist-Leninist. It was a result of his expropriation of American-owned property in Cuba after the revolution. (A big chunk of that property was owned by Mafia families - in the form of hotels, casinos, and various unsavory businesses.)

Officially, in order for Cuba and the US to get back on speaking terms, Cuba must make restitution for those properties. That is not going to happen.

More likely, there is going to be some serious turmoil in Cuba when Fidel dies or becomes incapable of continuing as dictator. Some speculation is that his brother Raoul will not succeed Fidel. Right now the bets are open on just what does happen at that stage.

You can bet that if the Miami Cuban enclave has anything to say about it, a whole bunch of expatriate families will suddenly find reasons to go back and claim property and try to take over.

My guess is that there is not any longer going to be any probability see you later as Florida is a political swing state. The Cuban exile community in Miami is a significant political impact in determining which way Florida votes for the time of Presidential elections, and Florida in turn is a serious state for Presidential elections because it does no longer reliably vote for both social gathering. almost all the Cuban-American community in Miami is produced from Cuban exiles and dissidents who oppose Castro and Communist rule, so if any presidential candidate needs a probability at Florida, they ought to help the embargo. That suggested, the earliest that ties between the US and Cuba can warmth is probably after Fidel Castro and his brother Raul die, or maybe then it really is not any truth - leftists in Latin u.s. like to bash the US for imperialist regulations and moves of the previous century.

The open exchange of ideas, goods, and services is the surest way to bring democracy to Cuba. The embargo has failed to change the regime. We should end the embargo and begin a dialogue with Castro on opening his country up to our products. The simple fact is that when Cubans come to want their Ipod's, their McD's, their Nikes, and their MTV, communism will be all but dead in Cuba. End the embargo.

YES! Had JFK not been assassinated, the embargo would have been lifted back in the 1960's. JFK was secretly communicating with the Cuban Government for Months, before he was killed and they were very close to a deal.

I think it would benefit both of out Nations to end the embargo.

Yes. They are not a threat. Plus, one of the best ways to foment change there is to open things up to see how good capitalism can be.

Besides, we're buddies with commie nations why not them too.

I'd love to go visit, see the beaches, smoke a cuban cigar, eat some good cuban food. Oh wait, I can go to Florida for that... 8-)

No, but we should also embargo China. Not for their Communist regimes but for their human rights violations as well as their horrid record of agression.

Yeah it doesn't make any sense to boycott one country for being Communist while trying to make things work with another. No one really knows why we're still not trading with them. It's time it was lifted.
