It really depends on the saddle. I suppose measuring a western saddle is probably the most common. So if you are measuring a western saddle, you would measure from the point behind the pommel, to the edge of the cantle. Most of the time the actual seat is suede on an otherwise smooth leather saddle. The best way to describe the measurement if you aren't familiar with saddlery terms is to find the length of that suede area.
An english saddle is a little different, as is an australian, you still measure from pommel to cantle but they start at a little different points on the saddle. Good luck!

You are measuring the seat size.
If you have a tack shop in your area go in and spend some time and sit in a few. They all feel different. Have someone show you some different sizes and see what they think you will need.
Then the saddle also has to fit your horse.
Most likely semi-Quater horse bars will work. Those are very common and fit most horses.
Even if you do not buy an brand new saddle at least you will learn more about what you want in a saddle and what to look for as far as fit. Tack shops can be a gret help in saddle fitting and answer most of your questions.

Dont read answers from smartass like the one above me. You are measuring from the saddle horn straight back to the back edge of the seat, not across the seat or how wide the seat is. You want to make sure you get a saddle to fit you, too small or too large of one can be uncomfortable for you. Also, what kind of horse do you have? They make saddles with different "Bars", meaning they are made to fit certian types of horses. Like quarter horse bars or Arabian bars. Arabians have shorter backs than quarter horses so their saddles are made more compact to fit thier backs better. Go to www.corrientesaddleco.com and look at some of their saddles. They also have their phone number posted on thier website so you can call them. I have ordered 3 saddles from them and are very pleased. If they don't answer, leave a message and someone will call you back, they are super nice people. I have just assumed you were talking about a western saddle. If not sorry! In English saddles you measure from the screw in the front straight back to the back of the seat. Good luck.

You measure from the highr point of the pommel to the high point on the cantle straight across. It measures the seat. In a western saddle it is measured from just behind the pommel to the cantle.
