Where can I find data on the number of Americans investing in the stock market over time?

I'd like to make a chart for the last 100 years or so about how the percentage of Americans investing has increased significantly over time. Do you know where I can find that kind of data?

As a start, you might want to do a Google Search (or Yahoo search) on the phrase "stock market particpation rates"

Several articles will pop up on the topic. The ones I looked at don't give exactly the information that you want -- but I believe that some of them will point you in the right direction.
