I see it on invites but what does it stand for?

Hi, I see everyone has answered this question but here's a literal meaning:
Reply if it pleases you.
and the "you" is the polite, proper "you" (vous) with both singular and plural meaning, not the informal singular you (tu). So it is a very very polite way to say, "Let me know if you're coming, please."

The term R.S.V.P. comes from the French expression "répondez s'il vous plaît", meaning "please respond". If R.S.V.P. is written on an invitation it means the invited guest must tell the host whether or not they plan to attend the party. It does not mean to respond only if you're coming, and it does not mean respond only if you're not coming (the expression "regrets only" is reserved for that instance). It means the host needs a definite head count for the planned event, and needs it by the date specified on the invitation.

It's a French paraphrase of "respond, if you please". I don't know the exact spelling, but the French words are "risponde si vous plait", which is where the R.S.V.P. comes from.

Repondez-vous s'il vous plait. Answer please. It is a polite way of asking you to tell the people inviting you if you are coming. When you see this, it is rude not to reply with acceptance or regrets.

Please respond. It's a request so that I know that you got an invite and i also know if you will be accepting the invite.
