You cant trace the sender, but you can stop it. Ring tel no (UK), 0845 7034599. It is all done on the phone, and takes about 2-3 Min's.

Edit- OOps sorry I automatically assumed you meant junk email (spam) and not regular mail!

Sadly it's pretty much unstoppable. The best you can do is install a junk email filter (Outlook 2003 and Thunderbird both have them built in). This will then 'learn' what is junk and what is OK, it will then move the junk to a different folder to allow you to delete it easily.

As for tracing the sender, that sadly takes a lot of resources. The bulk of professional spammers are paid by criminals (it's estimated that the Russian Mafia is the biggest player), they use 'zombie' (computers that they have control off, but the owners knows nothing about, some virii cause them to gain control for example) computers to send millions of spam each day, and reports claim they only need a few people from the million to take up the offer for the company to make a profit on doing it!

This is the Computers - Internet section, you do mean junk e-mail, right?
You can't trace it. Many spammers and scammers use 'zombie' pc's to send their junk e-mail, or otherwise cover their tracks by disguising the address. Some use a legit and innocnent address. Just report it as junk if your provider has that option.
Learn to use the junk mail filters that come with your mail to filter out the worst.
Have at least two e-mail addresses. The one you get from your internet provider should be kept as private as an ex-directory phone number, familt and friends only.
Next have a more public ddress with a free webmail such s yahoo but not using your real name, use a nickname. Thats for people you don't know so well.
Finally you can have a third public address which you use for web forums and the like, just ditch it when the junk starts coming in.
Any address you publish is going to be targetted for junk mail.
Never even open a junk e-mail, it just lets them know that address is live. Just delete it.

you didn't say what mail server you use, but in any case most of 'em have a settings button, click on that and take a look at the options, you can filter your mail in this way as I have done, only mail from those addresses in your contacts list are to go to the inbox, any other goes straight to the junk mail folder, it works pretty well, I now know any mail I have in my inbox is someone from my list of contacts, and the junk mail folder I just click on empty, I don't even open it.
if someone new does send mail they will usually let you know they sent mail, and ask did you not get it, now check the junk mail and add their address to your contacts list so they will go to the inbox in future,
it all boils down to putting everyone you wish to receive mail from in your contacts list. may be time comsuming if you have lots but in the end it is really worth it.

On the internet (e-mail): don't open the messages, block them, or delete them. If you reply, the sender knows your account is active, and will keep on sending junk.
Set your secuityfilter really high.
