Organized religion did...the same ones who wrote the Bible. When two people commit themselves body, mind and spirit to one another, they are already married in the eyes of God.

Historians have tried to trace its origins unsuccessfully. The oldest records all refer to marriage as an established custom.

Adam and Eve never existed. It was a way for men to control women..keep them as property.
