Roman citizens were put to death by having their heads removed from their body. This being the most noble and preferred way for the sons of Rome. Those not of the citizenship, who were just under Roman authority... ie. Jews, Christians,... were not given the same benefit. Death on the cross was the more popular method. The idea was to both humiliate the victim and at the same time, set an example of what criminal activity would come to.
