He should be sleeping around 16 hours in a 24 hour period. He should only be awake for 2 hours a time, any longer and he will be overtired and it will be almost impossible for him to fall asleep and stay asleep. I have a home day care and the babies I keep take at least 2 naps during the day. If he wakes around 7, he should go down for a nap around 9. Two hours is a good length for his nap at that age. So, he's up at around 11, then back down for an afternoon nap around 1 for another 2 hours. Some babies need an early evening nap for about an hour around 4pm. That should only be until around 9 months of age. Then finally, an early bedtime no later than 8pm, 7 is better. All the parents of the kids I keep are skeptical about this schedule until they see how it really works. The kids sleep better at night because they sleep better in the day and they are happier kids in the long run. Don't believe me? I had to listen to a 1 year old cry and whine alllll day because she couldn't stay asleep at her nap times today. Her parents kept her up until 10pm last night, that's what they admitted to, who knows how late she actually stayed up. She only slept for an hour this morning, and did not sleep at all in the afternoon because she was so overtired and worked up she could NOT get to sleep. On a normal day this child will sleep 2 hours at each nap time and goes to bed at 8pm and wake around 6 am. Babies need schedules and sleep just as much as they need food. Good for you for trying to get a good one started!

Every child is different. Although doctors recommend naps, my daughter's pediatrician said as long as she is sleeping through the night she is fine. From nine months on my daughter has not taken a nap no matter how much I tried, she is 22 months old now and has been sleeping through the night since six weeks.
When she did take a nap she would nap around 10:00am and sleep from one to two hours. That was the only nap I was able to get her to take a day.
Don't force your child to take a nap, if he/she takes a nap he/she takes a nap. If there is no nap being taken during the day just make sure your child has 15-20 minutes of down time, i.e.reading a book, relaxing with mommy or daddy, watching a cartoon, etc.

I have figured out that babies make their own schedules - you just have to pick up on it!! My son goes to bed between 8 and 9 and then wakes up 10-12 hours later. His morning nap is usually 3 hours after he wakes up . He sleeps for 2 hours then naps again around 5 for just about 1.5 hours. I have noticed his little repetitive nap cycle. Just 2 naps seem sufficient, but you can read your baby better than you think ! Good luck!

My baby boy used to take at least three naps a day at the age. Both of my kids love to sleep. Getting alot of sleep at the age is normal for your baby.

Lay him down at 11 am for a nap and he should sleep for at least an hour or two. That's what I did with mine, or take them for a care ride. That always works. Good luck.
