The best solution that I know, doesn't work instantly but works. It is called "Milky Spore" and you can get it at Home Depot and stores like that. You sprinkle in in a grid fashion on your lawn by the teaspoon full (unless the directions have changed in 4 years) and it will end up giving the Japanese Beatles a virus that they pass on to each other and over the years kills them off. You will see less beetles each year and I think that we went 15 years before redoing it a few years back. It works in the long run but for the present just give then swimming lessons in a container of anything that will kill them by holding the container under the bud and they will naturally drop to the ground and into the container. Another swimming lesson failure, Oppps. :)

if you are dealing with japanese beetles, I feel your pain, putting out the traps may add to the problem the only way that may work is if you have a garden in the city where the bugs are in much smaller nombers. The bags attract the bus to your yard but they destroy the plants as they head your way maybe causng the population to tripple. i would put the bags away place then in a plastic bag and seal it store it incase you feel that that worked better for you. the only way you can help the problen is by collecting them by hand and placing then in a container with soapy water this will keep them from swimming out and flying away. using chemicals is very bad because they tend to kill all the microscopic organisms that help keep the soil rich.

Sevin dust will help control jap beetles on roses. You have to dust the plant with it every time it rains. Sevin dust is available at lowes or any garden center.

A soapy water solution should help, no bleach or anti-bacterial.
