Why is a Bachelors degree called a bachelors degree?

It's related to the word baccalaureate (not bachelor, as in a single guy), which has to do with finishing up schooling or a degree.

Because the degree holders in those earlier days were unmarried young bachelors.

I don't know...but I really used to think that there were people out there that had a degree in being single!

Because once you receive it, you are considered a Bachelor.
