Well, it was never a negotiation, given the temporal promise of returning it was not part of a dialog, it was a strategic move to appeal to the international community, but Israel never meant to return anything, they know the Palestinians wont accept other agreement than the one made by the UN in 1946, and Palestine would be mistaken if they had accepted such an agreement, because racial hostilities have continued on the necessary crossing between interrupted Palestinian territories, prolonging the ongoing military abuse of Israeli soldiers over the Palestinian populace

and this is not an isolated occurrence, Israel has never respected its own agreements regarding settlements or the use of armed force

I've been watching the events on BBC World and things are not looking good. And the Palestinians are NOT playing victims here! Neither are the Israelis. This collective punishment for the actions of a few militants will only make Hamas more popular or lead the Palestinian people into more choas.

It seems that some of the commentor lack both historic and an accurate knowledge of the Palestine-Israeli conflict. Now I'm not a liberal but it seems that people see all Palestinians as terrorists and nothing more. Israelis are seen as the good guys trying to defend themselves from a formiable foe. That same type of thinking has been applied to most conflicts around the world from Chechnya to Darfur. Sorry to puncture that way of thinking but not all conflicts are that black and white.

I watch CNN, Fox News and MSNBC. If the Palestinians are mentioned it is either in the tickertape at the bottom of the screen or if it is related to terrorism and Israeli retaliation for attacks inside Israel. When Israelis are injured or killed in suicide bombings or random attacks between Hamas and the Israeli Army or civilians, the Fox News Alert logo runs across the screen with a large caption underneath. CNN, MSNBC and smaller local media are guilty of this and react in the same way, without providing any type of a Palestinian point of view. For at least several minutes reporters talk back and forth with analysts and other Israeli officials about the terror attack or situation taking place. When Palestinians are killed or hurt, there is only a brief mention of it that usually relates to Hamas or terrorism in general. Not even a minute or two for that matter is given toward the Palestinians injured or killed during the Israeli retaliations in Gaza. And I won’t lie there are some people who might consider this type of broadcasting from Israel’s perspective “favoritism.” It’s the favoritism that angers Palestinians and many throughout the Muslim world and no I’m not just referring to the Middle East. By not showing the suffering of Palestinians and only focusing on Israel, it sends a message to the people and Hamas in particular that America and the West does not care. Nor does it want to listen to the cries of those living under occupation. And by not showing the long waits at Israeli checkpoints, the closure of Gaza’s borders, the strict curfews on the West Bank, bull dozing of homes, whole families made homeless as a result of an Israeli retaliation for a terrorist attack, the recent incursion into the Gaza Strip and the daily humiliation of Palestinians denied the right to live in peace and dignity shows that many in the West do not consider Palestinian suffering as great or important as Israeli suffering. It also gives many angered youths and families reasons to blame not only Israel but its biggest supporters America. Most Westerners’ lack of knowledge of Palestinian suffering, while showing complete sympathy for Israel in times of attack sends messages to the Palestinians that Israel can do whatever it wants or pleases in Palestine and no one will say anything. Less think much about it.

There are some Westerners who do have sympathy for Palestinians but are seen as bias or unfair to Israel. I’ll be honest, all we hear in American media and British news concerning the conflict is always from the perspective of Israel or the Israelis. Any view or concern for Palestinians is seen as somehow supporting terrorism. So much for freedom of speech and opinion.

Well done Israel. It’s a good response.
Hamas are now the government within Palestine and if they continue attacks of this type Israel is right. If Israel had not acted in this way we would probably see another one of those BRUTAL beheading videos of this young Soldier posted on the Internet within a week. Can they save this boy? I doubt it. But they are sending a clear message to Hamas that they will pay a very high price for Iraqi style kidnappings and executions.

As for civilian casualties. It’s the duty of any government in this case Hamas not to act in a way that puts there own people in danger. If they don’t care about there own people, its very unfortunate.

I am so sick of the Palestines trying to play the victim. For many years now the Palestines are the cause, not the victim.

Can they stop this? Of course they can. It’s easy they are the Palestinian government. Release the young Soldier and its over.

They have been fighting for hundreds of years. Tolerance on both sides is limited and negotiations have been going on for years. If only there was a simple answer to this one...

Under "normal" situations one would expect more diplomacy though. Imagine if the Canadians captured a few U.S. border patrol officers. I'm sure there would be a few conversations before the tanks crashed through the border to rescue them.

Hello?! They don't know anything but violence over there. Even if they tried negotiations one side would do something before they finished talking. Cutting water and power will just make people sick, then they'll start dying. Israel fights dirty like the rest of them.

I would leave that between those two countries. We are only news readers and we dont know the real truth. For as long as I could remember, my late grandparents and my parents used to say, those two countries been fighting each other for ever and ever. Who are we to judged who is right and wrong? Leave them to fight their wars and only if they seek our help then we will provide..if we get the permission of the rest of the world that is.

You neglected to mention the instigating issue: The Palestinian government snuck into Israel and kidnapped an Israeli citizen, and murdered two others.

I hopes Israel kicks aasss and takes hyphenated names. Israel is going to have to teach the terrorists a lesson.
