1960s hippies were different from 1950s. So many people were blown away by the events of the times. The lid was blown off of culture, sort of. Kids found that they were able to do whatever they wanted, experiment with anything, and they weren't struck by lightening and chuted straitght to hell. No, hell is a longer and more winding road. Many of those hippies (eg, Abbie Hoffman) ended up on Wall Street after they explored all of the social possibilities of acid.
Youth today owes a lot to those original commune dwellers. My personal pest control guy is an old hippie. He totally understands every bug known to man and can recount stories of living with bugs organically in the commune where he once lived with his girlfriend. He will quickly tell you that the hippies of those days were every bit as jealous, selfish, arrogant, deceitfuil, etc. as the general population. So don't go romanticizing the Woodstock generation. The facts won't support it. All the same, the frickin' lid was ripped off Pandora's Box and we are still trying to figure out the role of parents and children with each other.

The counterculture of every generation changes and attempts to move away from their parents, who are deemed as "square" or "lame" or "uncool".
As they move away from their parents, they realize that their parents knew a lot of what they were talking about and all the knowledge and wisdom they have stored away over the years, can then be utilized in dealing with the real world. The process then repeats as their children move away from a similar standard, towards similar distractions, just in whatever form is provided by the media and society and the secular world of their time.
We are currently experiencing the first revolution of the popular music world.
Baggie jeans aren't new, "elephant legs, bell-bottoms, flares", our dances aren't new either, "the robot and the wave, breakdancing" and all that good stuff. Our parents did it when they were kids, our children will think it's something they invented also; it's the same thing with hippies. The youth will always have a counterculture under which some are classified as whatever society chooses to classify us as. Society sees us in the simplest terms and the most convenient definitions, but Ecclesiastes says it best.
What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which one can say, "Look! This is something new"? It was here already, long ago; it was here before our time.
Ecclesiastes 1:9-10

1960's hippies were people who were not happy in society. They became social outcast and did their own thing (peace, love, drugs), only to find out that they were not happy there either. Many became 'Jesus-freaks', and wound up very happy. Some helped start Integrity and Maranatha music. Many are pillars of churches today. They were just searching for the truth-some found it.

i used to think that hippies where people who smoked weed and cared about peace on earth and all that. which is true they did but did you know that back in the day marijuana was legal then? and also that cocaine and other drugs were to? like they made movies about cocaine and they used to accually put in sodas. but that all happened before they(the gov.) realized what they were doing. its true. they used one drug to get you off of one and then another to get you off of that one and so on untill they realized what they were doing.they used to liquify the cocaine and shoot it like heroine. ne ways yeah i know a couple of people who are hippiesfrom back in the 60's and 70's. all i get from them is they still like to smoke weed and party. and man can they party!!!
sorry if i didnt answer your question, i just had to tell someone about how bad the gov. ***** up. i thought it was funny.
peace!
