When I have my period it lasts about 3-4 days. When I was younger is used to last 5-7 days.
I'm not sure what you mean by "average age" but I can tell you that I was 11 years old when I started having mine and I am now 25 years old.
Your period blood is made up of blood and the lining of your uterus which is called the endometrium. An egg from your ovaries is also expelled at this time. This happens because you didn't get pregnant so your uterus has to get rid of the old egg to make room for a new one. Basically, your body is cleaning out your uterus.
If you have any more questions about your period talk to a trusted female family member, a nurse, a doctor, a teacher or even a sex educator.

I got mine when I was 12. Apparently, the age of menarche (Greek for "first period") is getting younger and younger, down to 9 or 10 sometimes. Some people think it's because of hormones in meat and dairy foods or because people have better nutrition and so girls are maturing faster. Nobody's too sure about the reason why.
My periods were normal until age 18, when I got polycystic ovary syndrome and I stopped menstruating regularly. Before that, they came about every 4 weeks and lasted 5 or 6 days. Now I'm on birth control pills to regulate my period, so they're about every 25 days and last about 5 days. As long as your period happens about the same way (like, 4 days every month), then it's probably OK. Most women have their own unique cycles unless you live with other women who get their periods regularly--then you'll probably all get it at about the same time. Weird, but true. But if you have your period one month, then skip two months, then have it a week later...it's irregular and it may mean you have hormone issues. Get a calendar and chart your period if you want to keep track of it--you'll probably see that there is a pattern to it--a certain number of days long every few weeks. If you have less than 6 a year, it's considered irregular and you should get it checked out. Irregular periods are rough and can make you feel terrible and hurt your chances of getting pregnant when you want to. But that's just information--don't freak out about it. My periods were a little irregular for a year or so after I started getting them and then they were regular for several years.

Some women start early & some start late. Some people go any where from 2-7 days that i've heard of. A period is the shedding of a females uteus & this is why you bleed every month. If you talk to a doctor they'll be able to tell you more about it & could explain it better.

I got mine on my 8th birthday and it used to last 7 - 10 days and now I am 22 and it lasts 3 - 5 days. It varies a lot from what I know. My sister got it at 12 and it used to last 3 - 4 days now it lasts her about 5 days.

Umm, your period is when your body releases the "blood" like substance that borders your uterus if you were to have a baby. If your Ova (egg aka potential baby) isn't fertilized then it will dissolve and a couple days later you'll start to bleed. Not to worry, it's normal. It's also normal for girls to start at 11 and 12, I started one month after finishing the fifth grade! It just means your growing up and have begun puberty. Some girls even start at the age of nine!
