Find a staffing resource company near you, and they can help you connect with area companies who are hiring.

My answer won't work for you, it sounds like, right away, but, if pursued, holds promise for someone in your situation over the "long haul". Librarianship. And, you may not even need a library studies degree to be paid well. However, if you want to advance toward managerial-level type positions in a library setting, you'll need to have a library degree, usually a "terminal" master's at most schools that even offer the program. You identify yourself as "intelligent"--it would seem that you might like working in a library setting then. If you are someone who can combine traditional library skills with newer information technology skills, you'll definitely be set for a position that could comfortably support a family, especially in a moderately large city. Librarianship will be seeing many openings as the next few years pass and the "baby-boomers" who currently hold these jobs retire. Good luck.

Sign up with a couple of reputable temp agencies in your area. You can indicate that you want a temp-to-perm position, and they will test you on your office skills.

That way, a prospective employer can give you a chance on a temp basis, see how good you are, then hire you permanently. And a degree doesn't matter if you kick butt at your job. If the company's really cool, maybe they'll even pay for you to get a degree.

Good luck!

Growing up here in sunny Las Vegas, I've watched a few of my female friends go in to the female escort industry right out of high school. Now say what you might about it, but they were normal people. Normal people who cleared 10 grand a month. I would shack T and A for 10 grand a month, but I have C and B and I think women get paid more for doing it anyways.

Call or apply online to all the legal offices you can think of. Sometimes they take on a trainee and that will lead to a very good paycheck and possible career. Sometimes, they help pay for your school.
Also try BIG real estate offices, sometimes they just need a gopher real bad and that quickly leads to a better position.

Check out this website, and if you see the infomercial on T.V. check it out. This looks pretty good to me and I will be trying it out. This lady is honest and down to Earth.
Good luck!
