Tough question. But, Tony Gwynn is best hitter for sure. He strikes out less and is the ultimate contact hitter. Ichiro is a better overall player than Tony. Ichiro has a better arm and better range than Gwynn had in his playing days. Both are great HOF players though. Any manager would love to have either on his team.

My conclusion is:

Best Hitter: Tony Gwynn
Best Overall Player: Ichiro Suzuki

Tony Gwynn is better than Ichiro. Ichiro may be better in the field but Gwynn is a great hitter. He has a higher OBP%, higher slugging% higher batting average and a higher OPS. Ichiro gets overated in his hitting because he gets so many AB's. He never walks and because he gets around 700 AB's he is bound to get over 200 hits. Also Gwynns OPS+ is well above than that of Ichiro. 132 to 121. Both are great players but Gwynn gets the edge.

Tony Gwynn is already down in history as one of the best hitters to ever play the game. Ichiro is a great player but he needs more great years to be in Tony Gwynn's class.

>>who "is" better Tony Gwynn or Ichiro Suzuki<< Since Gwynn has been retired from MLB for 5 years and is now 46 years old I would feel fairly safe in saying Ichiro "is" the better player right now...."IF" Ichiro plays 8-10 more years at the same level he did his first 5 "then" you might be able to compare the two players careers...Ichiro's defense has really fallen off this year from a RF(range factor) average of 2.4 his first 5 years to 1.96 this year...Gwynn was actually a good RF for the majority of his career...I doubt there is a GM in baseball would would not love to have either Gywnn or Ichiro at their best...BTW Gywnn hit .371 in his two WS...

Having seen Tony Gwynn play and not seeing Suzuki, I would vote for Tony Gwynn, yet that wouldn't be fair to Suzuki's talent.

I think Tony Gwynn has the better bat, but Suzuki, from his stats is the better fielder.
