I really think this free speech thing is going too far ... if it's OK to desecreate a flag, then it's OK to spit on the graves of those who died for our right to fly that flag ... and of course it'll be OK to tag government buildings ... and on and on ... a bit of common sense and common decency wouldn't go astray ... there are many things in the Constitution that aren't spelled out ... I doubt very much if the founding fathers ever thought that the question of burning the flag of their new country by its own citizens would ever arise! You can't write down everything in a constitution, but think some things should be self evident!

I personally find burning the flag in protest disrespectful and don't like it.

Remember though, that the correct way to dispose of a flag IS to burn it (e.g. if it is tattered or hits the ground, etc)

But, we should NOT alter the constitution to ban it. The supreme court already ruled on this years ago. It is a form of free speech. There is plenty of free-speech I detest but defend the right for them to say what they want. You know, everytime somebody says-- "the troops are prtotecting our freedom" (which I don't buy), THAT is one of freedoms they are defending.

We have way too many more important issues to deal with. This recent debate is a political ruse for the mid-terms. The gov. needs to focus on more impartant things (this and giving themselves a raise ISN'T one of them).

to jerry_f -- So, I guess in your opinion we should just eliminate the constitution.

I think we shouldn't even be having a debate. The flag is a symbol of our country, and it should not be desecrated.
It is just a smoke screen to keep the publics mind off the major problems in this country. A regular Bush tactic.

the flag is just a symbol to brainwash the people. It doesnt stand for anything. The concept of country itself is a British invention. Remember the country name BRITAIN itself is derived from BRAHMIN and the fact that there are seven letters of the English alphabet in it are no coincidence either. Each of the alphabets was invented AFTER the control went to a Brahmin-lineage 'king'

I think it is yet another symptom of people losing perspective. Is it nice/good to burn the flag? No, I suppose not. But do we have anything more important to be debating/considering? Probably thousands of things.

If the right to free speech, even forms most people disagree with, is curtailed, then what are we fighting for? Isn't that the type of right that differentiates the US from its enemies?

I understand the freedom of speech and all, but it's disrespectful to our troops and their families. I'm sure they don't want to be over there as much as we don't want them there, but they are fulfilling a commitment to our country and we should honor them.
