I was IMing a Spanish friend last night after the Spain-France match, and I was far more upset about the outcome than he was. He explained to me that there was no reason to expect Spain to win because they never get out of this round. Today, I read the player's comments about the game on the World Cup website, and pretty much everyone except for Fernando Torres was as pessimistic about what Spain's chances were as my friend was.

Is Spain really doomed to never get to the Quarter-Finals? Or is it a self-fulfilling prophecy--no one expects them to get past this round, so they never do. If it's the latter, then what would it take for Spain to have the confidence to get past the Round of 16?

I think it is not a curse but it has got to do more with the uniquely complicated social picture in Spain.
When Spanish players play they dont represent Spain.....but Catalunia, Castillia, Basque...or even Gallicia ! It is this lack of national unity that causes Spain's undoing. They have produced incredible players. But you have to play as a team to win WC. I mean there are similar rivalries in other countries....take Milan rivalry for example, these players cut each other up in the league but when it comes to national teams they get along pretty well....only once did it happen when Gianni Riva ( AC ) & Sandro Mazzola ( Inter ) did not get together in 60's, result ? Losing to North Korea in '66, 4-1 drubbing in 1970 final ! see !

But for a spanish team...a player bred in Barca will never get along with one from Real....I agree it is the greatest rivalry in football history, but ultimately Spain is the loser.

I think La Liga is far superior to the actual Spanish team. Spain is decent players that represent Spain but not to the caliber of other teams. Spain lacks a superstar, a good punch. Fernando Torres seeemed to provide some in the early going but is simply not experienced enough to get anymore. If you look at the teams that are in the quatrter finals.
Figo, Christiano Ronaldo (Portugal)
Beckham, Rooney (England)
Ronaldinho, Ronaldo (Brazil)
Shevchenko (Ukraine)
Henry, Zidane (France)
Pirlo, Totti (Italy)
Messi, Crespo (Argentina)
These are all acclaimed superstars and canchange the game with a single touch on the ball. I dont think Spain has that right now. Raul for example is simply not at this caliber. Look at the last world cup, Ballack carried Germany, Ronaldinho carried Brazil, Sas and Rustu carried Turkey and FIFA carried Korea reached the semis.

The only reason everyone but Torres was the only one ready to win was because he is still "the kid" as they call him and he hasn't been there for the other cups. As of the "curse" I personally don't think there is one I just think that the World Cup is bought off and there's nothing anybody can do about it.

Spain fail because, like England, they don't play the way they play in their own league. Their natural style of play is a high tempo pressing game. Most opposing teams prefer a slower game and they usually allow the opposition to set the tempo.

When they play their own style (eg against Ukraine) they are among the world's best.

Due to its Moorish ancestry SPAIN is very fatalistic
aside of that the exgerated number of soccer stars play
ing in the Spanish Liga makes it very difficult for local
talent to be recognized

I was wondering the exact same thing. The saddest thing is that a lot of them actually felt it was their year. The pre-game stuff that Casillas said sounded fairly hopeful. But yeah, maybe they are cursed.

i dont think theyre cursed, its just that they lose it during the world cup. maybe the pressure gets to them or maybe its bad luck that they always go against better teams than them. they probably just panic or something.
