depends....i give clients my cell # but its for business purposes only...if he has another cell for personal use then id say its okay...but if you feel uncomfortable you should say so and if anything happens you should stop seeing him seek counsel elsewhere and report him...and he should NEVER under any circumstances give you his personal address or home phone

I'm not a psychologist but I do know they will generally give you their CARD and tell you to call anytime - but it may go through an answering service. I think there's something strange going on. A little over the line if you ask me. Who would want a bunch of people calling their cell phone - I mean all their patients???

I don't believe that it is odd that your therapist gave you his cell number. (If he had given you his home phone, that is a little too personal)
A lot of the times therapists will give their patients 'homework' or assignments to work on to overcome their fears or anxieties and while confronting these, the patient can become overwhelmed. Or sometimes a person remembers something that might be important to the next session might come up.
Or maybe the patient remembers something traumatic and needs help getting through it.
And sometimes, a patient just needs to talk.

A therapist can help you work through whatever you are feeling or facing at any time.
When you are feeling overwhelmed, sometimes it helps to have someone who is objective coach you through it - they know the techniques.
Having access to someone who doesn't judge you while you are working through personal issues is very important to a healing process.

A friend of mine was given the cell phone number of her phsychiatrist. I know it helped her, because she had to call him in the middle of the night a couple times. I know that at my university it isn't all *that* unusual...but outside of that, I don't know.

I don't know if it's standard, but my therapist did the same thing. I guess it's to make sure you always have someone to talk to if things get really bad.

It's odd, and a little inappropriate, but he may just sincerly want to help you.

I wouldn't think anything of it. He gets paid for talking to you.
