apparently there are about 3-4 layers of the coating on the human body before you hit the nerve/bone. 2 of which are the skin consisting of the the dermis and epidermis. the tatto ink needs to seep onkly into the top layer to stay put but as the cells on the top layer are shed, the ink looses its vitality and has to be touched up....

bad idea to do self tattoos there has been numerous reports of staph infections lately due to improper use of ink and needles and all that. people have been getting these infections left and right. go to a licensed tattoo artist if you are sure you want one.
