There is no visible mold or mildew on the books, just a smell.

Unfortunately, once your books smell like mildew, even if you get the smell out, it's a bad idea to put them back with other books. They probably have mildew spores on them (even if they don't have visible stains), and the mildew can take to your other books very easily.

If you can put them out in the sunlight in warm weather, that should help, but find somewhere dry to store them that isn't in contact with other books as long as you keep them in the future.

Airing them out is the best way. If you have a protected porch (screened in would be ideal) you could stand them open on a table on a low-humidity day and let the fresh air do its work.

Let it air out for a day or two, then put a Bounce dryer sheet in the book before you put it back on your shelf. Sounds silly, but it does help!

I'm trying laying the pages open beside a bowl of vinegar. Vinegar draws odors. I wish you well.
