Gold rings only cost slightly more than the cost of the actual gold in them, implying that they are easy to make. Platinum rings cost far more than their material costs, which implies that they're very costly to make. Any idea why?

So far Eva's answer is the only one that makes sense. The cost of the platinum itself already reflects the rarity of the material, it shouldn't impact the actual labor costs, which seem siginificant.

It's the difference in the casting process. Platinum is a fickle when casting into jewelry, and it takes a true expert to do it with any degree of success. The end product is stronger than that of gold.
White gold on the other hand gives you the same basic look and is less costly.

When dealing with precious metal(s) Platinum is more durable, than gold. Gold has different recipes(Added material for cwt., and color. Zinc is added to make Green colored gold, Copper for Rose gold etc..) The cost of finding and mining also contributes to the cost. Labor extensive. Platinum being a dense metal becomes an Heirloom for future generations.

Platinum is one of the most precious metals on the earth. It weighs more than gold and is less hollow. Also it takes less care to take care of than gold.
